Letter from The President

Frankly Speaking:

"In the course of one month I interview over forty men and women trying to get into stuntwork and acting. They come from all walks of life and from every part of the country. They are certain that upon reaching Hollywood they will immediately be offered a stunt or acting job.

These newcomers boast of their 'theatrical experience,' home town high school plays, church benefits; stunts they've done by jumping off barn roofs and sliding their cars, not to mention that they can do any stunt seen on TV; and they proudly announce that they are ready for the big time and Hollywood. . .

. . . the question is: Is Hollywood ready for them?

They come to filmland by the hundreds: on planes, buses, freight cars and even on foot; inexperienced, starry-eyed and invariably sure of themselves.

Years later, some will be found along the Sunset Strip, employed as bouncers, cab drivers, bartenders and 'models,' the rest, disillusioned and defeated, have wisely returned home. The few who make it are those who had sense enough to realize that 'stuntwork and acting is a science that must be studied like any other profession.'

People are not simply 'born' into a profession, no matter how talented they may be. It takes time: ten, twelve, sometimes twenty years to become a doctor, dentist or lawyer: working, living and breathing their chosen profession, eighteen hours a day. Why, then should a stuntman or actor be different? However, it requires less time for a stuntman or actor to achieve more, emotionally and financially, provided his of her dedication and determination are comparable to that of the doctor or lawyer.

'Stunt people are a proud breed.' and being part of it, I want to impress upon you that in my opinion, it is the most discouraging, heart-breaking, but rewarding business I know."

Sincerely,

Mr. Kim Kahana
